Ten years ago: Vice President George Bush was the big winner in the Super Tuesday Republican presidential primaries. Among Democrats, Michael S. Dukakis, Jesse Jackson and Al Gore split the lion’s share of delegates. Seventeen soldiers died when two Army helicopters from Fort Campbell, Ky., collided in midair.

Five years ago: On Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average soared to a record high, climbing 64.84 to end the day at 3,469.42. Singerband-leader Billy Eckstine died in Pittsburgh at age 78.

One year ago: President Clinton ordered federal agencies to hire off welfare rolls.
