Spokane Art School is offering an answer to parents’ prayers during Spokane School District’s early dismissal days afternoon workshops on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The classes, 1:30 to 3 p.m., are open to children in first through third grades, as well as home-schooled children.
On Tuesday, students will make “Pennants for Spring Breezes” with artist Toni Planstino. On Wednesday, artist P.J. Stoddard will teach fresco (fresh plaster) painting.
Cost is $12 per child per class.
And, for those who plan in advance, classes for all ages are scheduled during spring break, April 6-11.
SAS will offer a “Watercolor for Calligraphers” workshop from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday for calligraphers, artists and designers who are at least in grade eight and have some experience. Artist Claryn Reid will teach techniques for water coloring calligraphy projects. Cost is $23.
Reid will also teach a spring garden greeting card workshop from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Saturday. That workshop is $23.

The Society for Renaissance Performers will hold auditions at 3 p.m. today in the North Spokane Library, 44 E. Hawthorne. The society needs singers, musicians and actors for its annual Renaissance Fair, mid-July through mid-August.
Theater Arts for Children, inside University City Mall, will hold auditions for “Who’s Afraid of the Big Bad Wolf” at 1 p.m. today. No advance preparation is required.
Debut Performing Arts of Spokane will sponsor master classes and auditions Saturday for Western Ballet Theater’s production of “Romeo and Juliet.”
The May 15 performance in the Spokane Opera House will feature members of Ballet Idaho of Boise, and Eugene (Ore.) Ballet.
Local dancers are needed for the street and ballroom scenes, said Wayne Larson, Debut Performing Arts spokesman.
Master classes will be 10 to 11:30 a.m. for beginning dancers, and noon to 2 p.m. for advanced dancers. Auditions will follow at 2.
Toni Pimble, WBT artistic director, and Lisa Moon, ballet mistress, will conduct the classes and auditions.

‘Sidewalk Cafe’ exhibited
Spokane artist JoAnne Nixon’s painting “Sidewalk Cafe” was selected for exhibition in the Great Plains National Juried Show.
It was one of 68 works chosen from 775 entries by artists in 46 states.
The exhibit runs through March 17 at the Moss-Thorn Gallery in Hays, Kan.
