Titles For Shorewood And Rainier Beach

Nina Lowe scored 12 points and Stephanie Hart collected 11 rebounds as Shorewood (23-6) won its first state title with a 41-32 victory over Blanchet (25-5) Saturday night in the State 3A girls basketball tournament finale in the Kingdome.

The Thunderbirds went ahead for good with 1:28 left in the first quarter.

The Braves, looking for their third title in four years, trailed by four points at the half, but Shorewood scored the first nine points of the second half to put the game out of reach.

Katie Borton and Allison Eldridge combined to score 31 points to lead the Rams (26-1), who finished third, to a victory over the Panthers (26-5).

Chief Sealth 70, Meadowdale 67

Sheila Lambert broke the single-game and tournament scoring records with 42 points, leading the Seahawks (22-5) to a triumph over the Chiefs (25-2) for a fourth-place finish.

Lambert’s 42 points bettered the record of 37 by White River’s Renea Ross against Holy Names in 1996. Lambert had 128 points for the tournament, breaking Ross’ record of 98, also in 1996.

Ellensburg 54, Capital 44

Senior point guard Tami Standish scored 27 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to spark the Bulldogs (21-9) to a victory over the Cougars (20-7) for the fifth-place finish.

Boys

Rainier Beach 44, Olympia 40

Jamal Crawford scored 16 points and David King grabbed 17 rebounds as Rainier Beach held off an Olympia rally to win its second state basketball title.

Rainier Beach, which also won the state championship in 1988, finished with a 26-2 record. Olympia wound up at 25-2.

Mount Vernon 70, Mercer Island 56

Grant Leep capped his prep career with 28 points and 13 rebounds as Mount Vernon defeated Mercer Island for third place.

O’Dea 69, Clover Park 51

Doug Wrenn scored 27 points, giving him 82 for the tournament, as O’Dea beat Clover Park to finish fourth.

Tumwater 46, Burlington-Edison 44

Senior post Jozsef Szendrei scored 19 points, pulled down 16 rebounds and hit two free throws with 2 seconds left as Tumwater edged Burlington-Edison for fifth place.
