Bishops Seek Release Of Political Prisoners

Nigeria’s Roman Catholic bishops urged the country’s military ruler on Sunday to release all political prisoners before Pope John Paul II visits later this month.

In a statement released after a meeting in the eastern city of Onitsha, the bishops also called on Gen. Sani Abacha to repair relations with the country’s opposition groups.

“Reconciliation is achieved through dialogue between opposing parties with a capacity to listen to one another and a possibility for collaboration that builds up solidarity among people,” the statement said.
