Hints From Heloise

King Features Syndicate

Dear Heloise: This is for the lady who is having trouble seeding choke cherries. I do not know the correct name of the utensil, but I think a blackberry seeder would work for other small-seeded fruits. It consists of a metal tripod stand with a removable metal cone-shaped colander and a wooden cone shaped pestle.

Place the tripod over a bowl and put the colander in the tripod stand. Drop your fruit into the colander and use the pestle to mash the fruit. Turn the pestle in a circular fashion, and all of the pulp and juice will drip into the bowl while leaving the seeds and skin inside the colander.

These utensils may be difficult to locate, but I have seen them advertised at our local farm-supply store. Hope this helps! - Cindy Smithhart, Henderson, Ky.

I know exactly what you are talking about. Down here, one of my secretaries has one of them and uses it when making homemade applesauce. - Heloise
