Shadle Bowler Makes All-State; Highlanders 4th

David Miller earned first-team all-state honors and led the Shadle Park boys to a fourth-place finish at the Washington State High School Varsity Bowling Championships that wound up Sunday in Kent.

Miller had the fourth highest average in the tournament, a 213.

Shadle, second after the first day, finished with 49 points and a 9,639 pinfall. Omak won the title with 62-1/2 points and a 9,734 pinfall.

Joining Miller on the Highlanders are Keith Christensen, Brian Aylesworth, Ricky Brown, Lewis Stevens and Joe Cahalan.

West Valley (37, 9,052) was 17th in the 28-team boys field. Eagles are Matt Descoteaux, Jeff Frank, Chuck Bullock, Shawn White, Eric Morasch and Anthony Hernandez.

In the 16-team girls competition, Rogers was sixth (43, 8,442) behind winning Eisenhower (55, 8,647). The Pirates are Sharon Moore, Amanda Bass, Katie Greener, Kim Seifert and Kari Seifert.

College baseball

It was a case of too little, too late for Gonzaga University in a 15-8 loss at Long Beach State on Monday night.

The Bulldogs (2-8) fell behind 12-1 after five innings before outscoring the 49ers (10-8) 7-3 the final four innings.

Brett Van Anne stroked a two-double to left-center in the sixth to get the Bulldogs untracked. George Arnott then had a run-scoring single in the seventh before Bo Hart hit a two-run triple in the eighth. Adam Stokey capped a 3-for-4 day with a two-run homer in the ninth.

Luke Gradishar delivered GU’s first run with a single in the second.

Justin Hall’s three-run homer highlighted the 49ers’ 17-hit attack.

College golf

Idaho is 11th and Washington State 14th after the first round of the Oregon Duck Invitational men’s tournament in Eugene. The final 18 holes are today.

Low Cougar was senior Max McCain with a 73.

WSU junior Stefanie Coleman shot a 5-over-par 77 to finish at 234 and tie for 10th as the Cougars women finished seventh in the prestigious Ben Hogan Intercollegiate in Fripp Island, S.C.

Thirty-fourth ranked WSU had a 950 54-hole total. Jennifer Dodd tied for 18th at 237. No. 5 Georgia won with a 916 in the 18-team field.
