WSU’s Dietel Named Pac-10 Conference’s Freshman Of The Year

Alki Dietel of Washington State was named the freshman of the year when the All-Pacific-10 Conference women’s basketball teams were announced Monday.

Dietel, from Halle/Saale, Germany, the first Cougar to win the honor, led all freshmen in the conference in scoring (11.9 points per game) and blocked shots (.67).

She was the Cougars’ No. 2 scorer and No. 1 shot-blocker.

No Cougar made the 10-woman first team. Dietel and senior center Yvonne Kunze received honorable mention.

All-freshman honorable mention went to WSU’s Tricia Lamb from St. John-Endicott.

Adia Barnes, the first three-time All-Pac-10 selection from Arizona, is the conference player of the year. She was the leading scorer (21.9 ppg) and ranks fourth in career scoring with 2,174 points.

Joan Bonvicini, who led Arizona to its best finish, second with a 14-4 league record, was named coach of the year.

Besides Barnes, the All-Pac-10 team includes just one other repeater, Stanford senior center Olympia Scott.

Two Washington Huskies made the team, juniors Amber Hall, a forward, and guard Jamie Redd.

Others: Kristin Clark, USC, jr., guard; Kristin Folkl, Stanford, jr., forward; Natalie Hughes, Oregon, sr., guard; Erica Gomez, UCLA, sophomore, guard; Maylana Martin, UCLA, so., forward; and Vanessa Nygaard, Stanford, sr., forward.
