Acl Tear Sidelines Stanford’s Folkl

Contra Costa (Calif.) Times

Stanford’s Kristin Folkl, called the best player in the country by her coach, Tara VanDerveer, will miss the NCAA Tournament after suffering a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in her left knee.

An MRI performed Tuesday night revealed the tear. Folkl also suffered structural damage to the meniscus and a bone bruise.

The injury came early in Stanford’s Tuesday practice during a routine fastbreak drill. No one is sure whether the injury happened when she jumped or landed.

VanDerveer now faces the task of preparing her team for Saturday’s tournament opener at Maples Pavilion against No. 16 seed Harvard without Folkl or Vanessa Nygaard, who suffered a torn ACL in last Saturday’s regular-season finale at Oregon State.

Nygaard will test her knee in a special brace today and hopes to be able to play if Stanford advances to a game on Monday. She will not play Saturday.
