Dishman Hills Project Site On Web Regal Elementary 5th-, 6th-Graders Receive Out-Of-State Inquiries About Page

Want to know more about the Dry Land Preserve, also known as the Dishman Hills Project?

Get on the Internet and type in the address www.sd81.k12.wa.us/Regal/. Then click on “projects” by fifth- and sixth-graders.

Then thank the 54 students at Regal Elementary School who created this Web site.

The site went up last week after months of research and observation by students at the preserve, according to Regal teacher Gen Fiorino.

Fiorino and teachers Cec Mooney and Rick Severn helped provide technical support for the students.

“It’s an absolutely wonderful preserve,” Fiorino said. “They took observations, measurements of soil, water, air temperatures, sampled soil and observed animal life.”

The kids did all of the writing for the interactive map, Fiorino said.

In just the last week, teachers and students from California and New York have contacted Regal inquiring how they can get their own Web pages up and running.

“This is really a super effort by these kids,” Fiorino said. “We’re all really excited about it.”

Money for the program was provided by a grant from Apple Corp. The money was awarded to the Spokane Public School District in the fall.

Mt. Spokane High has a jazzy band

Mt. Spokane High School grabbed first place in the Class AA Division in the school’s first appearance in the recent Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival in Moscow, Idaho.

The win enabled Mt. Spokane to perform at the Washington Water Power Instrumental Winners Concert before thousands at the University of Idaho’s Kibbie Dome on Feb. 28.

The Wildcats finished second in that competition behind Garfield High School of Seattle. Mt. Spokane managed to score big in the AA/A Sweepstakes and took home a new drum set.

Mt. Spokane’s Josh Simon won solo in baritone saxophone competition while Mead High’s Ryan Keberle won the trombone solo competition.

Along with Mt. Spokane High’s Tiffany Keller, who earned the chance to play Hampton’s xylophone, Simon and Keberle were accompanied by Hampton and his New York Big Band.
