Residents Warned Of Possible Frauds In Deer Park Area
Sheriff’s detectives are warning North Spokane County residents about two possible frauds which recently surfaced in the Deer Park area.
In the first, an individual claiming to be Nigerian writes to intended victims and asks them to provide their bank account numbers.
He says he needs the numbers in order to move funds legally out of Nigeria and into the United States, according to sheriff’s detective Larry Olson.
“In almost every instance, the writer intends to steal the victim’s money from the account,” Olson said.
In the second possible scam, an advertisement was run in a local newspaper seeking people who are unemployed.
The ad gives two phone numbers for a dataentry firm. One number is to a fax machine, the other gets a person who requests your major credit card number so you can be billed $195 for information they promise to send.
When asked, the company “representative” refuses to give the name or address for the company.
“At the very least, you’re likely to be out the $195,” Olson said. “Much more likely is that the suspect will lodge charges on your credit card until the card limit is reached.”
It’s not a bullet
Spokane police responded to a report of a shooting with a victim on an STA bus on March 3 about 7:45 p.m.
But there was no bullet involved.
When officers contacted the driver on Rockwell near Lee, they found there had not been a shooting. They determined a rock, pellet or BB struck the rear window of the bus, police spokesman Dick Cottam said.
The object did not penetrate the glass, but it scattered glass fragments inside the bus. Passengers thought a shot had been fired and some had taken cover on the bus floor. One passenger injured an ankle during the commotion, he said.
Officers searched several blocks in the area but did not locate a possible suspect. The bus was taken out of service to have the window replaced.
Burglars arrested
A pair of suspects, one of them armed with two handguns, were arrested after Home Environments at 6909 N. Division was broken into on March 2.
Deputies arrested Christopher L. McCabe, a 20-year-old transient, and Seth T. Blair, 21, 1528 W. 11th.
Deputies responded to the business after a caller reported seeing someone inside the business, according to sheriff’s spokesman Dave Reagan.
McCabe was was booked into the Spokane County Jail for first-degree burglary and three outstanding warrants. Blair was charged with first-degree burglary and felon in possession of a handgun.
