We’re Still Waiting For ‘The Big Lewinsky’

Compiled By Staff Writer Rick Bo

You’ve probably heard of “The Big Lebowski.” Now meet the real Lebowski.

Jeff Lebowski, an assistant attorney general and former prosecutor in Minneapolis, says he’s nothing like the pot-smoking loafer depicted in the movie by Jeff Bridges.

“I’m not aware of any parallels between my life” and the film, says Lebowski, who went to the same suburban high school as filmmakers Joel and Ethan Coen.

However, he said he’s been “having a good laugh” about it. “I just had a judge today ask me, ‘Are you the original Lebowski?”’

A spokesman for the Coens’ production company said they don’t remember going to school with Lebowski, and got the name from a friend of their sister.

“So Mr. Attorney General is in the clear - or we are,” he said.

Loose talk

“L.A. Confidential” director Curtis Hanson, on the predicted “Titanic” Oscars sweep: “You know, it was a foregone conclusion that the ship was going to get to New York, too. So, we’ll see what happens.”

The one who did very well in ‘Fargo’

William H. Macy turns 48 today.

Like they say, here today, yawn tomorrow

Kevin Costner’s “The Postman” was named worst movie drama of 1997 by The Boring Institute. “For Richer or Poorer,” starring Tim Allen and Kirstie Alley, was the most lackluster comedy, while Rowan Atkinson’s “Bean” was singled out as “by far the worst British import.”

There’s a thousand islands for undressing

The town council in tiny Tangier Island, Va., vetoed filming of Costner’s new movie, “Message in a Bottle” (co-starring Paul Newman and Robin Wright Penn) after seeing the script. “They were taking clothes off and taking her clothes off,” Mayor Dewey Crockett said. “We realized the movie would have an economic impact on the island, but it would also be undermining what we have stood for all these years.”

Guess you could say he won the Latka read

Following an intense round of auditions, Jim Carrey captured the lead role in “Man on the Moon,” an upcoming film biography of his late comedy idol Andy Kaufman. Carrey beat out the likes of Kevin Spacey, Edward Norton, John Cusack and Nicolas Cage.

But they’re still missing Linc and Pete

Claire Danes (“Romeo and Juliet”) is expected to star in a big-screen updating of “The Mod Squad,” playing Peggy Lipton’s old role of Julie. The movie will have the juvenile delinquents turned undercover cops infiltrating the Los Angeles club scene.

We’ll see how it does at the barks office

Will success spoil Eddie? The canine co-star of television’s “Frasier” (whose actual name is Moose) takes top-dog billing in his first full-length motion picture, “Moose on the Loose,” about a celebrity TV dog who saves the life of a poor dog and its master.
