Elma Outguns Blaine For 2a Boys Championship

Associated Press

Ben Dougherty had 20 points and seven assists to spark the Elma Eagles (22-5) to a 98-89 victory over the Blaine Borderites (24-2) in the State 2A boys basketball championship.

The 6-foot-3 senior forward scored eight points in the final 3:30 to help the Eagles fend off the Borderites.

Blaine took an 82-81 lead when sophomore guard Luke Ridnour sank a 3-pointer with 3:42 remaining, but the Borderites missed six of their next nine field-goal attempts.

The loss spoiled another outstanding performance by Ridnour, the tournament MVP who scored 24 points to go with his 12 assists and four steals.

Elma, which shot 33 for 52 (.635) from the field, got 17 points from Scott Freymond and 16 from Dustin Clark.

Elma had the advantage at the free-throw line, sinking 26 of 37 attempts (.703). Blaine converted 10 of 15 tries (.667).
