Favorite Trick Wins

Compiled From Wire Services

Favorite Trick, the horse of the year for 1997 when he won all eight starts, made his 3-year-old debut and his first start for trainer Bill Mott by winning the Swale stakes on the Florida Derby card at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale.

Favorite Trick took the lead with a little less than an eighth-mile remaining and won by 1-3/4-lengths over Good and Tough.

Lil’s Lad finished first, but lost the race on a disqualification that made Cape Town, ridden by Shane Sellers, the winner of the Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park.

Ridden by Jerry Bailey, Lil’s Lad, seeking to remain unbeaten in four starts this year, gave up the lead to Coronado’s Quest, regained it and held it to the finish.

In fighting for victory, however, Lil’s Lad bore out near the wire and bumped the onrushing Cape Town.

Cape Town paid $27,80, $6.20 and $2.80 for his second win in three starts this year.

Artax, considered the West Coast’s leading Triple Crown candidate, held off Real Quiet down the stretch to win the $250,000 San Felipe Stakes at Santa Anita Park in Arcadia, Calif.
