Ferris Girls Can’t Block Out Sehome, Take Home Eighth Place

The legs gave out before the hearts.

Too many games battling too many bigger players took its toll on Ferris.

The Saxons were destroyed on the boards and ultimately on the scoreboard, falling 58-37 to Sehome Saturday afternoon in the Kingdome in the State 4A girls basketball tournament.

In the game to determine fifth and eighth places, Sehome had a 40-18 edge in rebounding, including 16-4 on the offensive end.

“We played hard, two words beat us,” Ferris coach Art Rojas said. “Block out. We didn’t block out today. We played bigger teams in this tournament and out-rebounded them.”

The Saxons (22-7) were down just eight boards and seven points at halftime. It was four points early in the third quarter when the Mariners (25-4) started a 16-2 run.

Senior guard Jennifer Oberleitner had eight of her 12 points in the quarter, 5-11 senior Stacey Miller, who had 17 points and 13 rebounds, dished off three of her six assists and 6-3 center Sarah Onion, bound for UNLV, patrolled the inside. Ferris made one of its final nine shots in the quarter, falling behind 43-27.

“I think we were gambling too much so they were getting easy baskets,” Ferris senior Amy George said. “We weren’t blocking out.”

Sehome scored the first nine points, four on offensive rebounds by Miller and Onion. The Saxons recovered and scored the first seven points of the second quarter to take a 15-13 lead. The Mariners outscored Ferris 12-4 over the last 5 minutes to go up 27-20 at halftime.

With Onion hitting seven of nine shots, Sehome shot 47 percent, while the Saxons shot 30 percent. The Mariners made nine layups and had seven put-back baskets. They also handled the Saxons’ pressure, committing 16 turnovers, many in the extended time for the reserves.

“We had a good year,” Ferris senior Janelle Morrisette said. “It was a good end. I wish we could have had a ‘W’ but in my heart we’re the best, the trophy just says eighth.”
