There were waves and Forestier beef and vintage wine - just like in the first-class cabin of a certain well-known ocean liner 86 years ago.
But this time, the food and drink were of Croatian origin. And afterward, guests at “The Last Dinner on Titanic” laid down their gleaming silverware and silk napkins and calmly sailed off home.
About 400 prominent Croatians attended the dinner Friday at a Zagreb hotel. The organizers’ aim: to promote the Hollywood blockbuster Titanic, which arrives in Croatian theaters on Thursday.
Lighting experts performed professional tricks to give the illusion of waves pounding the facade of the downtown hotel up to the 17th floor.
The dinner menu was virtually identical to that of April 14, 1912, just hours before the Titanic hit an iceberg and sank. They began with canape Admiral and soup Olga, then proceeded to poached salmon in a Mousseline sauce. Then, Forestier beef with potatoes, pate of peas and mint.
The crowd heard a local pop star performing Celine Dion’s movie theme “My Heart Will Go On” and saw a clip from the film at midnight.
