Gu, WSU Come Up Short On Road

A three-run sixth inning was the key as Cal State Northridge captured an 8-5 non-league baseball win over visiting Gonzaga University Monday.

The big inning staked the Matadors to an 8-4 lead and Gonzaga could only manage one more run.

Gonzaga (2-15) got within one run on George Arnott’s grand slam in the sixth before Northridge responded in the bottom of the inning with the decisive runs.

Bo Hart knocked in the Bulldogs’ last run in the seventh with a sacrifice fly. Northridge pitchers shut down Gonzaga in order in the eight and ninth to close out the game.

At Berkeley, Calif., Washington State belted five home runs among 21 hits, but still came up short in a 17-16 loss to the California Bears in an 11-inning marathon at Evans Diamond. The teams combined for 43 hits, nine home runs, four doubles and two triples off nine pitchers in the 4-hour, 15-minute non-league game.

The win boosted California (11-11-1) to an eighth straight win, including a sweep of its three-game series with WSU (7-10).

Todd Meldahl started for WSU and was followed by Dave Wheeler, Aaron Cozzens and Reggie Rivard (0-1), with Rivard throwing the final three innings. He yielded five hits and surrendered two runs, both in the 11th inning when the Bears battled back from a 16-15 deficit.

WSU returns to action Wednesday at Spokane, where they take on the Gonzaga Bulldogs at 2 p.m.
