WSU’s Daniel Picked Academic All-American Again

Washington State senior Carlos Daniel was again recognized as one of the top 15 men’s basketball student-athletes in the nation with his selection to the 1998 GTE Academic All America third team Tuesday.

The 6-foot-7 forward is one of only four WSU student-athletes ever to attain GTE Academic All-America status twice. This is a repeat performance for Daniel, who was also a third-team pick in 1997. He owns a 3.51 cumulative grade-point average as a history major.

Senior Pat Garrity of Notre Dame, a pre-professional science major with a 3.68 GPA, was honored as the GTE Academic All-American of the Year.

Washington State also placed more men on the Pacific-10 All-Academic squad than any other conference school.

Daniel became the first Cougar to earn first-team recognition from the league three years in a row.

The Cougars placed sophomore Blake Pengelly of Eugene, Ore. (3.67 GPA, undeclared) on the Pac-10 second team along with juniors Will Hutchens of Dayton, Wash., (3.77, crop/soil science) and Leif Nelson of Riverside, Calif. (3.81, psychology). Kojo Mensah-Bonsu, a junior from England (3.00, general humanities), was an honorable-mention selection.

On the women’s side, sophomore Joanna Smith of North Vancouver, British Columbia (3.14 GPA, undeclared) was given Pac-10 honorable mention.

Johnson returns to Chiefs

The Spokane Chiefs announced left wing Ben Johnson has returned to the team. Johnson spent the first part of the season with the Chiefs, before being assigned to the Rochester Mustangs of the United States Junior Hockey League. In his 24 games with the Chiefs, Johnson totaled one goal and five assists. , DataTimes
