Arcadia Kids Take First In Creativity Competition

The team representing Arcadia Elementary School in the worldwide Odyssey of the Mind competition earned a trip to the state playoffs with a first-place regional finish on Saturday at Shadle Park High School.

The team of Chrissy Barnes, Andrea Lawson, Karrah Lundgren, Whitney Weisgerber, and Elyse Valenzuela will compete at state in Yakima on April 18.

All the girls are sixth graders except Valenzuela, who is in the fifth grade.

The team is coached by Gerri Lundgren and Vicki Weisgerber, teachers at the school in the Deer Park School District.

Odyssey of the Mind is a worldwide program for students in elementary and middle school.

It is designed to be a competition in creativity, challenging young minds when presented with certain topics.

In the competition, teams were given categories to select from. One was a long-term problem, a short-term problem and spontaneous situation.

The Arcadia team chose “The Classics” and “Marvelous Mentors” as its long-term problem.

The girls chose Leonardo da Vinci as their mentor. They then had to put on a play, create an advertisement and show how the mentor they selected would effect an advertising agency.

The last step was to produce a commercial about a product they could sell. All this had to be done in less than eight minutes and they couldn’t spend more than $100.

The winner of state competition advances to national competition in Orlando, Fla., in May.
