City Council Schedules Date For Appeal Of Shopping Center

The Spokane City Council has scheduled for April 6 an appeal of a large shopping center project at 44th and Regal.

Members of the Moran Prairie Neighborhood Association filed the appeal after the shopping center was approved by the city hearing examiner in December.

Dr. Ralph Berg and family members want to develop a 70,000-square-foot supermarket and two smaller retail buildings on eight acres just north of Shopko.

Association members said the proposal fails to address stormwater runoff and does not comply with the city’s current regulations requiring evaporation ponds.

They also have argued that the size of the shopping center makes it illegal under the city’s comprehensive plan, which requires big shopping centers to be built at the intersection of two major arterials.

Members of the association will hold their monthly meeting tonight at 7 p.m. at the Moran Prairie Grange. The appeal will be one of the meeting topics.

Also, members of the association want to talk about their proposal for a joint tree-planting program with Spokane County to beautify 57th Avenue when it’s widened this summer.
