American Is Among Pope’s 3 New Bishops

Compiled From Wire Services

Pope John Paul II ordained three new bishops - including one American - in a solemn ceremony Thursday in St. Peter’s Basilica.

The three close aides - an American, an Italian and the pontiff’s Polish secretary - “are particularly close to me for their unique service to the Holy See and to me,” John Paul said.

Monsignor James Harvey, 48, of Milwaukee, Wis., served for many years in the Secretariat of State until recently being named to head the papal household, responsible for arranging audiences and meetings.
