Is Your Pet Lonely? Turn On The TV

From Wire Reports

Are your pets watching too much television? Before leaving the house, nearly one in three owners turns on the radio or TV to keep their pets company, American Demographics magazine reports. Forty-one percent leave the lights on.

Surf’s up at home

Surfing design trends can have its ups and downs. Michelle Lamb, editor of The Trend Curve, and Katherine Cook of Enesco Corp., a leading manufacturer and distributor of home accents, gifts and collectibles, ride the waves as part of their job. Here’s what they see on the horizon.

On the fabric front, they say, T-shirt knits are still hot, as are Polarfleece, chenilles, sheers and printed linen.

Colors? They’ve got colors. Neutrals remain the norm, but will be redefined with metallics (especially silver), black with white, brown or brights. Rich reds are also moving to the forefront, along with sister shades of paprika, cinnamon and tomato.

Images are as pretty as a picture. Apples are back and there’s a renewed interest in florals. Roses are an important re-emerging motif, and images of tulips, daisies and hydrangeas also remain strong.

Carpet mashed? There’s help

If your carpet looks like winter has gotten the best of it, the folks at the Carpet and Rug Institute, a trade group, have a suggestion.

To remove indentations in your carpet caused by large pieces of furniture, use the edge of a coin to gently raise the carpet fibers. To really bring the fibers back to life, use steam from a hot iron held no closer than 4 inches.

Happy anniversary

Sunset, the magazine of Western living, will celebrate its 100th publishing anniversary in May and is marking the occasion with lots of special articles and events.

Anniversary features will include winners of the Sunset reader photography contest, a special series of “Western Wanderings” columns, winners of the Western Classics Cook-Off, and a series of Western colors for the home called Custom Paint Palette.

A renovated Sunset demonstration garden is also under construction at the Los Angeles Arboretum. The 1.5-acre plot will showcase 10 theme gardens filled with ideas for visitors.
