Whiteman Sparks Vikings

Bret Whiteman’s two-run double in the fourth inning sent Coeur d’Alene toward a 5-2 non-league baseball victory over visiting Lakeland on Thursday.

The game was tied at 2 when Whiteman delivered. Starter Kirk Gosch (1-0) struck out seven for the Vikings (2-1).

The Hawks played their season opener.

Boys soccer

Sam Stroh assisted on J.J. Barlow’s second-half goal as visiting Lake City (3-0) registered a 2-0, non-league win at Cheney (0-2).

Stroh’s pass came after a free kick. The Timberwolves also scored in the first half, when a corner kick deflected off a Blackhawks defender into the goal.

Rob Christensen scored off a corner kick at 69 minutes as East Valley edged visiting CdA 1-0 in a non-leaguer.

Christensen caught up to Jason Fletcher’s corner kick after it bounced off a defender. Ben Tesch registered the shutout for the Knights (2-1).

The Vikings are 1-3.

Tony Wacenske scored the first two goals, including a breakaway of 40 yards, as West Valley (2-0) defeated visiting Lakeland 3-0 in a non-leaguer.

Nick Brumback had seven saves for the shutout. The Hawks dropped to 1-2-1.

Boys tennis

Cory Deleonard and Curtis Mills scored a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tim Zeitler and Aaron Parlin in No. 1 doubles as CdA (2-0) defeated Medical Lake 6-1 in a non-league meet.

Girls tennis

The No. 1 doubles team of Abbey and Leslie Davis defeated Beth Bow and Christie Silva 6-0, 6-0 during Coeur d’Alene’s 5-2 non-league win over Medical Lake.

Track and field

Eastern Washington’s Bob Omlin is third after the first five events of the decathlon at the Tri-Cities Sports Festival Track and Field Meet in Richland.

Omlin, a senior from Quincy, has 3,249 points to rank behind leader Jason Williams of Ricks College with 3,962 and Tyrinn Prince of Ricks with 3,333. Eastern’s Ryan Cole, a freshman from Ellensburg, is sixth with 2,851 points.

Marni McGregor, a freshman from Leavenworth, is eighth in the heptathlon with 2,820 points.

LaTroya Mucker of Washington State leads with 2,820 points. The decathlon and heptathlon conclude today, followed by the main portion of the meet on Saturday.
