Obituaries

Irma Connaughty Athol, Idaho

At the family’s request, no service will be held for Irma E. Connaughty, 69. Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Connaughty, who was born in Minnesota, died Wednesday.

She grew up and graduated from high school in Minnesota, where she lived for 42 years.

Mrs. Connaughty moved to North Idaho in 1985.

Survivors include her husband of 50 years, Wesley; three sons, Mike Connaughty of Oregon, Kelly Connaughty of Kentucky, and Tom Connaughty of Texas; three daughters, Debra Holmes of Indiana, Jane Johnson of Kentucky and Ginger Tramer of Oregon; 16 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Norman Howell Coeur d’Alene

No service will be held for Norman Hale Howell, 63. Coeur d’Alene Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Howell, who was born in Prairie City, Ore., died March 4.

He grew up in The Dalles, Ore., and Hood River, Ore., areas before moving to North Idaho.

Mr. Howell had worked as an automobile salesman for several area dealerships and wrote several articles for “Cruisin” and “Old Car News” magazines.

Survivors include a son, Glenn Howell; and two brothers, Laurance Howell of Oregon and Terry Howell of California.

Robert Conrad Tekoa, Wash.

No service will be held for Robert J. Conrad, 89, at his request. Burial will be at a later date at Holland Cemetery near Moxee City, Wash. Kramer Funeral Home in Tekoa is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Conrad, who was born in Centralia, Wash., died March 14.

He grew up in Tampico, Wash., and served in the Army during World War II.

After his discharge in 1945, he returned to the Centralia area. He was a self-employed logger in Washington and Idaho. Mr. Conrad retired and moved to Deary, Idaho, where he lived for 20 years before moving to Tekoa two years ago.

He is survived by a brother, Stanley Conrad of Arvada, Colo.

William ‘Ernie’ McGee Metaline Falls, Wash.

Memorial service for William Ernest “Ernie” McGee, 80, will be at 1 p.m. March 28 at United Church of Christ in Metaline Falls. Private inurnment will be at a later date at Metaline Cemetery. Sherman-Knapp Funeral Home in Newport, Wash., is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. McGee, who was born in Potlatch, Idaho, died Wednesday.

He graduated in 1936 from Potlatch High School and moved from Moscow, Idaho, to north Pend Oreille County in 1945.

In 1945 he married Mayme Bower in Ione, Wash.

Mr. McGee worked in small mills and sawed at blister rust camps. During World War II he worked several defense jobs, including at the Farragut Naval Station in Bayview, Idaho.

He worked at the Pend Oreille Mine for three years, then at Lehigh Portland Cement for 33 years before retiring in 1982.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, William McGee of Ferndale, Wash., Donald Colegrove of Spokane and Gerald Colegrove of Metaline Falls; a sister, Eileen Moe of Post Falls; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, the Metaline Falls Fire District or the United Church of Christ.

George Stuart Spokane

Memorial service for George A. Stuart, 72, was Friday at Millwood Presbyterian Church.

Mr. Stuart, who was born in Corpus Christi, Texas, died Sunday at a Seattle Veterans Administration Hospital.

He was educated at a Masonic children’s home in Fort Worth, Texas.

He served in the Air Force and was stationed in England during World War II.

In 1947 he married Terry Sterk and they moved to Spokane.

Mr. Stuart worked as an auto mechanic and also operated Stuart’s Garage from 1956 to 1962.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Cheryl Hacker of Edmond, Okla.; a son, Gary Stuart of Houston; and three grandsons.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Donna Baldwin Sandpoint

Memorial service for Donna Sue Baldwin, 60, will be at 11 a.m. today at Sandpoint United Methodist Church. Coffelt Funeral Service in Sandpoint is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Baldwin, who was born in Newport, Wash., died Tuesday.

She moved to Sandpoint in 1940 and graduated from Sandpoint High School in 1955.

Mrs. Baldwin attended the University of Idaho for two years and then worked for Vera McCulvey’s Jewelry Store in Sandpoint for seven years. She also worked as a teachers aide at Farmin Elementary School for five years.

She worked at various shops cutting dimensional lumber and helped establish and operate the Industrial Service Repair Cut Shop.

Mrs. Baldwin was a member of the Sandpoint United Methodist Church, the Daughters of the Nile Club and was a former JayCette.

She had served as a timer for junior ski races at Schweitzer Mountain Resort for three years.

Her husband, Don, preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Jim and Frank Baldwin, both of Sandpoint; her mother, Sue Diehl of Sandpoint; three sisters, Janie Nieffer of Moses Lake, and Avis Smith and Ann Isenberg, both of Post Falls; nine grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Arlan Erickson Coeur d’Alene

Memorial service for Arlan Charles Erickson, 76, will be at 1 p.m. today at Hennessey-Smith Funeral Home.

Mr. Erickson, who was born in Fergus Falls, Minn., died Wednesday.

He grew up in Spokane and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930s and served in the Merchant Marine in 1945.

Mr. Erickson worked as a tree faller and lumberman. He had also worked on the Alaska Pipeline as a carpenter and was a commercial fisherman out of Seattle and Alaska for 20 years. He also was a game warden in Alaska.

He moved to Spokane in 1991 and to Coeur d’Alene two years ago.

Survivors include his wife of seven years, Marjorie; two sons, Arlan Erickson of Spokane and Pete Erickson of Petersburg, Alaska; four brothers, Ed Erickson and Jeff Lind, both of Kent, Wash., Dwayne Lind of Enumclaw, Wash., and Larry Lind of Everett; three sisters, Margaret Gordon of Spokane, Grace Lind of Enumclaw, and Ruth Sims of Kent; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

Chester Rodell Coeur d’Alene

Service for Chester Emil Rodell, 85, will be at 11 a.m. today at Yates Funeral Home in Coeur d’Alene. Burial will follow at Forest Cemetery in Coeur d’Alene.

Mr. Rodell, who was born in Sweden, died Wednesday.

He immigrated to the United States when he was an infant.

He graduated from the University of Idaho in 1935, and became a teacher and principal at Hayden Lake (Idaho) Elementary School. He also worked as a special investigator for the War Department during World War II.

After the war, Mr. Rodell worked as station manager at radio stations KVNI in Coeur d’Alene and KNEW in Spokane, and then owned and operated Rodell Motors in Coeur d’Alene from 1958 to 1980.

He had received numerous awards at his car dealership, including Chrysler Motors’ Quality Dealer Award.

Mr. Rodell was a member of Phi Gamma Delta fraternity and Rotary International, serving as president of the Coeur d’Alene club.

He was also a member of the Royal Order of Jesters Spokane Court, Scottish Rite, El Katif Temple of the Shrine and the Hayden Lake Country Club.

Mr. Rodell served as the first president of the parents association at St. George’s School in Spokane.

He was also active in youth sports activities and the Vandal Boosters Club and helped establish scholarship funds for University of Idaho athletes.

Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marabel; two daughters, Kathryn Hunt of Hayden and Betsy Rodell of Liberty Lake; a son, Sam Rodell of Spokane; and two grandchildren.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Chester E. and Marabel Rodell Athletic Scholarship Fund at the University of Idaho, the Shriners Hospital for Children in Spokane, or St. Luke’s Church in Coeur d’Alene.

Gary Santoro Jr. Spokane

Service for Gary Paul Santoro Jr., 23, is set for 11 a.m. today at Riplinger Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Holy Cross Cemetery.

Mr. Santoro, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Tuesday.

He graduated from high school in Spokane and worked in construction at various places.

Survivors include a son, Tanner Santoro of Spokane; his mother, Laurie Santoro of Spokane; his father, Gary Santoro Sr. of Vermont; a brother, James Santoro, and a sister, Carrie Santoro, both of Spokane; and his grandparents, Jan and Ed Burtts of Spokane, and Jean and Martin Flynn of Massachusetts.

Katherine ‘Katie’ Skuse Spokane

Service for Katherine M. “Katie” Skuse, 12, will be at 11 a.m. today at Ball and Dodd Funeral Home - South. Graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Riverside (Wash.) Cemetery.

Katie, who was born in Seattle, died Wednesday while in treatment for leukemia.

She was a sixth-grade student at Roosevelt Elementary School and was a resident of Spokane for more than four years.

Katie was an honor roll student and was active in sports, especially volleyball. She also loved animals.

Survivors include her mother, Mickey Fevaleaki of Spokane; a brother, Michael Skuse of Phoenix; two sisters, Carrie and Monalisa Fevaleaki, both of Seattle; her grandmothers, Katherine Davis of Omak, Wash., and Millicent Robbins of Spring Lake, Mich.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Candlelighters Spokane Chapter.

Harold Thompson Spokane

No service will be held for Harold R. Thompson, 79, at his request. Hazen and Jaeger Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Thomspon, a lifetime Spokane resident, died Sunday.

He graduated from North Central High School and Washington State University.

Mr. Thompson served as an Army officer in the 671st Topographic Engineer Company during World War II.

He worked for Kaiser Aluminum as a mechanical engineer.

His wife of 55 years, Dorothy Thompson, died in 1996.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Dawson-Gruenhagen and Catherine Rice, both of Spokane; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
