Home Depot Will Open Second Store

From Staff And Wire Reports

The nation’s largest home improvement retailer will open a second Spokane store June 4.

The North Spokane Home Depot, near the Division “Y,” will include 105,966 square feet of retail space and a 23,332 square foot garden center. The store will stock about 60,000 home improvement, interior design and gardening items.

The Home Depot will hire about 150 Spokane residents to staff the new store. Applications will be accepted at the store beginning March 30.

When Home Depot opened its first store, at Sprague and Fancher, more than 7,000 applications were submitted for 150 positions.

“The Home Depot offers competitive salaries and a comprehensive benefits package, so a lot of people are eager to work for us,” said Justin Schaffer, manager of the new store.

Atlanta-based Home Depot employs 125,000 people and operates 636 stores in 42 states and four Canadian provinces. Gross sales topped $24 billion in 1997. The publicly traded company expects to have 1,100 stores by the end of fiscal year 2000.
