A Spokane Serving Of ‘Protein Power’

Rick Bonino Food Editor

The people behind the popular but much-disputed “Protein Power” diet will appear in Spokane next week.

Drs. Michael and Mary Dan Eades will sign copies of their best-selling book by that name April 3 from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. at Auntie’s Bookstore, 402 W. Main.

Supporters say the eating plan — which calls for more protein and less carbohydrates — promotes weight loss, boosts energy levels, lowers the risk of heart disease and reduces diabetic reactions.

Critics — including several sports and health organizations — claim a high-protein regimen could cause kidney problems. People lose weight on the diet, they say, because it is low in calories and digesting protein can lead to dehydration.

The Eades also will be keynote speakers at an April 4 conference, “Advances in Heart Health,” at Sacred Heart Medical Center. Registration is $60; for more information, call 838-5800.

For the Tum Tum

Fans of homegrown cookbooks might want to check out “The Heart of the Community” from the Tum Tum Community Center northwest of Spokane.

Recipes contributed by close to 100 area residents include everything from Chocolate Waffle Cookies to Honey Baked Lentils to Catfish Jambalaya. The book costs $10, with proceeds going to support the center. To order a copy, call Stella Batt at 276-5449 or Caroline Anderson at 276-8574.

Middle East feast

Middle Eastern food and dance are on the menu for the Layali Somar II celebration Saturday at 7 p.m. at the German American Society, 25 W. Third.

The festivities feature food from Azar’s Restaurant and dancers from Spokane, Seattle and Salt Lake City. Tickets are $20 in advance; contact Katy or Ra’ed Azar at 326-7171.

Amateur hour

Feeling creative? A pair of food companies are sponsoring contests to come up with ideas for new products.

The winner of Progresso’s Copper Kettle Soup Recipe Contest will receive $10,000 and see their soup added to Progresso’s product line. Entry deadline is April 30; for rules, send a self-addressed, stamped envelope to Progresso Quality Foods Co., Attn: Copper Kettle Soup Recipe Contest, P.O. Box 3644, St. Cloud, MN 56397-3644, or visit www.progressosoup.com.

Darigold’s “Contest With Culture” is even easier; just dream up and name a new yogurt flavor (no recipe required) for a chance to win $1,000 and have it produced by Darigold. Send entries by April 30 to P.O. Box 79026, Seattle, WA 98119, fax to (206) 281-3462 or e-mail to contest@darigold.com. , DataTimes ILLUSTRATION: Color Photo
