Moses Lake Woman Oscar Contest Winner

Donna Brown of Moses Lake is the big winner in this year’s Spokesman-Review Oscar Contest.

Brown chose right in 20 of 24 categories and correctly guessed that Best Picture “Titanic” would take home a record-tying 11 Academy Awards.

Four readers tied for second. Donald Lacky of Tacoma, Marty Utsunomiya of Moses Lake, and Mike Stone and 13-year-old Stephanie Yep of Spokane all recorded 19 correct guesses.

Albert Stone of Spokane also had 19 correct picks, but he placed third by virtue of the tie-breaker.

Brown, who didn’t even see all the films nominated for Best Picture, isn’t a big moviegoer. Despite that, she correctly guessed that little-known “Character,” the Best Foreign Language Picture from The Netherlands, would win.

“I just listen to people talk,” she said. “There are a couple of people that I talk with who are really into movies.”

She also watches a lot of television, especially CNN.

“They’ve got so many different people giving their views,” she says. “I kind of keep track of who likes what.”

Brown won the $100 grand prize, while the second-placers all earned $50. All alone in third, Stone won $25.
