Wallace Miners

1997 record: 16-7 Record: 1-0

Coach: Bob Schreiber, 8th year

Top returners: Kevin Tesky, senior, shortstop/right-handed pitcher; Cory Smith, junior, catcher; Kevin Lee, sr., outfielder; Dale Bourgeois, sr., infielder; Dustin Sheperd, sr., 2b.

Top newcomers: Jeff Sheldon, sr., left-handed pitcher/1b; Rian Comer, freshman, of; Darrin Lee, fr., c/of.

Coach’s comment: “It’s probably the least-experienced team I’ve had, but we’re more versatile than we’ve been. This gives more kids a chance to step up and prove themselves.”

Outlook: Wallace is hurting for games after Lakeside dropped its program. Schreiber is looking to pick up at least four games. Wallace lost three of its top six returning players - one to transfer, one to injury and one to eligibility. The Miners opened the season strongly last week with a 9-8 win at St. Maries. If they improve defensively, they might make a run for a trophy at state.
