Mariners’ Bats Heat Up

Edgar Martinez homered, doubled twice and drove in five runs Wednesday as the Seattle Mariners rallied to beat the San Francisco Giants 17-12 Wednesday in Peoria, Ariz.

Ken Griffey Jr. added a three-run homer and Glenallen Hill hit three doubles as the Mariners overcame an early 7-0 deficit.

J.T. Snow homered and drove in five runs for San Francisco.

The Giants took a 6-0 lead in the first inning against Felipe Lira, who will open the season as the Mariners’ No. 5 starter, as Snow hit a three-run homer.

They made it 7-0 with a run in the second and were ahead 9-4 after 4 innings.

The Mariners tied it at 9 with five runs in the fifth, highlighted by Griffey’s homer.

Martinez, who hit a three-run homer in the third, broke the tie with a two-run double in the sixth and came home on a double by Hill.

The Mariners scored five runs in the seventh as Rob Ducey hit a two-run homer.

Jay Buhner, Seattle’s regular right fielder, returned to the lineup for the first time in seven games and went 0 for 5 with four strikeouts.

The Mariners have two more games left in Arizona.

Doc delivers in spring warmup

Dwight Gooden pitched five strong innings for the Cleveland Indians in his next-to-last spring outing.

Gooden allowed two runs and seven hits, walking two and striking out three in the 81-pitch outing at Clearwater, Fla. Cleveland lost 5-4 to the Philadelphia Phillies.

Gooden will make his last exhibition start in a Triple-A game in Winter Haven on Monday while the rest of the team travels to Seattle for the season opener Tuesday.

Marlins forced to keep Cangelosi, Eisenreich

John Cangelosi and Jim Eisenreich will be Florida Marlins on opening day after efforts to further trim the team’s payroll by dealing the veteran reserves stalled.

The announcement ended weeks of anticipation for Eisenreich, 38, and Cangelosi, 35, who came to spring training expecting to be traded before the season’s start.

Moves

The Cleveland Indians released veteran second baseman Carlos Garcia, the team said. Garcia, 30, signed with Cleveland as a free agent in January. He was a candidate to fill the second base position left by the departure of free agents Tony Fernandez and Bip Roberts…. The Detroit Tigers purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Doug Bochtler from the Oakland Athletics. … The San Diego Padres placed left-hander Ed Vosberg on the 15-day disabled list as he continues to rehabilitate his pitching shoulder.
