Mead High’s Debate Team Wins Second State Title

The Mead High School debate team won its second-straight state title at the University of Puget Sound in Seattle earlier this month.

It’s the Panthers third title in four years.

Twelve of 21 Panthers reached the final round of competition.

Here is how they placed:

Dual interpretation: Tied for 2nd place, Andy Johnston; Jed Evans.

Humorous interpretation: 2nd, Andy Johnston; 3rd, Ethan John.

Expository: 1st, Sudha Nandagopal; 3rd, Amina Ansari; Finalist, Felice Cleveland.

Impromptu: 3rd, Jeff Hubbard; Finalist, Adam Christiansen.

Extemporaneous: 1st, Jeff Hubbard; 3rd, Jeff Sackmann.

Oratory: 2nd Emily Fetcho.

Levi is going to Disneyland

Levi Eggert, a sixth grader at Riverside Middle School, won a vacation package for two to Disneyland for a poster he designed for a statewide anti-tobacco campaign.

About 350 sixth graders from 16 schools in Spokane County participated in the Fifth Annual Tobacco Free Washington - Spokane anti-tobacco poster contest.

An awards ceremony will be held today for Eggert at 11:20 a.m. at the school. In addition to the free trip to Disneyland, Eggert will have his poster displayed on a street in Spokane (yet to be decided).

He also scored a movie pass to the Garland Theater and a Frisbee.

Midway to host science fair

Tomorrow’s scientists will have an opportunity to learn how a polygraph test works, how a Hovercraft levitates, what a barn owl eats for breakfast and how a cat can jump off a fence while keeping its balance, at Midway Elementary’s “Magic of Science Fair.”

The fair will be held at 821 Midway, E. Road in Colbert, from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday.

The inaugural event is aimed at sparking interest in science for children, young and old. Animal and human physiology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, public health, criminal justice, geology, aviation, and hydrology are among the fields of science to be represented.

Learn about assessment tests

Riverside and Chattaroy Elementary School District parents are asked to attend the Riverside district’s “Learn about Assessment Night” tonight at 7.

The meeting will be held at Chattaroy Elementary School, 25717 N. Yale Road.

Learn About Assessment Day is a statewide public awareness effort intended to involve the community in the new kindergarten through fourth grade assessment test.

The workshop will consist of speakers, discussions, a video and a sample of the test. Refreshments will be served and baby sitting will be provided for parents.

NC in the real world

A series of interest-based presentations titled, “The Real World,” are planned for students at North Central on Thursday mornings from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m.

Today’s topic is “Respected Self.”

The presentations are provided by staff members of Spokane Mental Health.

Here is a list of some upcoming topics:

Values and friendship, April 2.

Sexual harassment, April 30.

Dating relationships, May 7.

Drugs, alcohol, dating, May 14.

Friends helping friends, May 21.

Two or three additional presentations are also in the planning stages.
