Why Would He Want A Graven Image, Anyway?

Robert Duvall may not have won the best actor Oscar for playing a preacher in “The Apostle,” which he also wrote and directed.

But Duvall is satisfied with the hosannas he’s received from the likes of the Rev. Billy Graham and Marlon Brando.

“Dr. Graham saw it twice and said, ‘It’s going to be a guide to the 21st century.’ That’s pretty good,” Duvall said.

Duvall wouldn’t divulge the contents of the letter he recently received from Brando, his co-star in “The Godfather” and “Apocalypse Now,” offering only: “I’ll just say it was a great tribute coming from one of my heroes.”

Duvall’s next project is playing the coach of a Scottish soccer team in an upcoming film which he’ll also direct, to be released once again by New York’s October Films.

Loose talk

Spike Lee, on “Titanic” director James Cameron: “The guy’s a maniac, but in a good way. He’ll do anything to get his shot done. If it came down to killing someone to complete his film, I think he would kill somebody.”

He kills plenty of people in his movies

Quentin Tarantino turns 35 today.

It’s fitting that he’d end up in the drink

Fresh from his film’s 11-Oscar showing Monday night, “Titanic” director James Cameron is the latest celebrity to show up in a “milk mustache” ad. Cameron’s spot shows him in a leather jacket standing in front of the ill-starred ship, with the caption: “I like to float big chunks of ice in every glass.”

And $65 million is pretty tough to eclipse

John F. Kennedy Jr. showed up at Cape Canaveral on Wednesday for a special premiere of the new HBO miniseries “From the Earth to the Moon,” which chronicles the Apollo space program. “Some people thought that $65 million to do ‘From the Earth to the Moon,’ was a bit steep,” Kennedy said, “but I remind all of you that this film has landed 12 valiant men on the moon for one-fourth the price James Cameron spent sinking one old boat.”

He needs to check his statue’s limitations

Robin Williams, who won the best supporting actor Oscar for “Good WIll Hunting,” is still trying to figure out what to do with his statuette. “I’m not going to dress it up in little doll clothes like Tom Hanks does,” he declared. “No, no, I’m not that kinky. I think I’m going to make a hood ornament out of it. I wonder if that’s in the academy rules.”

Guess we’ll know when we see the trailers

Tacky talk-show host Jerry Springer has signed a $2 million movie deal with Steve Stabler, the man behind “Dumb and Dumber” and “Kingpin.” It’s still undecided whether Springer will do a biographical flick, a la Howard Stern, or play somebody else. Said his agent: “We’re just looking to do something that works for Jerry.”
