Freshman Jessica Murray provides a main ingredient in Shadle Park’s recipe for softball success, but every recipe needs a Cook.

Murray (2-0 overall) pitched 10 innings of one-hit ball Friday, and host Shadle (2-0 GSL) escaped with a 4-2 win over Lewis and Clark (1-1) when Juliana Cook hit a two-run homer in the 10th.

Murray, who struck out seven, allowed two runs in the fourth on illegal pitches. LC’s Kaylene Fountain (1-2), who struck out eight, allowed Kirstin Lynn’s single before Cook’s homer.

In other GSL games it was: Mead 5, Ferris 0; Rogers 5, Mt. Spokane 0; University 10, Gonzaga Prep 0; and Central Valley 6, North Central 1.

At Mead, Janessa Karstens (3-0) pitched a onehitter and struck out 11 of the 22 batters she faced as the Panthers (2-0 GSL) blanked Ferris (0-2). Mead’s Natalie Kehl and Missy Bonanno had three hits and one RBI apiece.

GSL baseball

Jim Travis made a game-saving catch in right field, with two runners aboard in the seventh, to preserve LC’s 13-12 win at Shadle Park.

LC (4-0 overall, 2-0 GSL) led 12-0 after 2-1/2 innings, as Kurtis Broderson homered and Garth Harskins doubled and tripled to combine for seven RBIs. The Highlanders (0-1) rallied with 10 unanswered runs, three on RBIs by Tim Snell.

Colin Shields’ RBI single in the seventh gave LC a 13-10 cushion. Shadle scored twice in its seventh and had runners at second and third, with two out, when Travis speared a fly in shallow right.

Elsewhere it was: G-Prep 9, U-Hi 1; Rogers 4, Shadle 3 in eight innings; Ferris 12, Mead 5; and CV 5, NC 0.

At U-Hi, Zach Yarbrough and Damien Ramirez (1-0) combined on a six-hitter and Derek Pegg homered to lead G-Prep (2-0) over the Titans (1-1). Pegg, David Sullivan and Jay Herrin had three hits apiece to generate a 17-hit attack.

At Rogers, Justin Miller singled after two intentional walks to score Jeff Mace as the Pirates (1-1) defeated Mt. Spokane (0-1) in eight. Rogers’ Chad Krebs doubled and scored on a double play in the seventh to force extra innings. The Wildcats’ Cole Young pitched no-hit ball for four innings.
