Scotties Start Fast, Win Gnl Openers

Freeman could grow to like the Great Northern League.

The Scotties, one of three Northeast A League teams playing fast-pitch softball in the 2A GNL, took the early league lead Saturday with a doubleheader sweep.

Helda Dahmen hit a grand slam in the first inning and Leslie White pitched a one-hitter as Freeman defeated host Newport 15-0 to complete the sweep.

The Scotties won the opener 15-5 as Lynzie Abbey had four RBIs. Mollie McDirmid went 3 for 3 with two RBIs in the opener and had Newport’s lone hit in the second game.

Elsewhere, Kim Erickson’s one-out, RBI triple in the seventh gave Medical Lake (1-1) a 5-4 win over Riverside (1-1) and a split of its doubleheader at ML.

Freshman Thera Hattenberg pitched a three-hitter and Sarah Lebahn had three RBIs on two singles as Riverside won the opener 6-0.

Riverside’s Jackie Hattenberg and ML’s Becky Hamel had two-run doubles in the second game.

Christa Brossman hit a three-run homer and tripled as Pullman (1-1) defeated visiting Kettle Falls 9-4 to earn a split of their doubleheader.

Kettle Falls (1-1) won the opener 9-8 as Rachael Kinservik struck out 10. Kinservik struck out nine in the second game, but Brossman and Julie Pollastro reached her for homers.

KF’s Shaina McDaniels and Pullman’s Jessica Wolfson hit three-run homers in the opener.

Freshman Andrea Rathbun had three hits and two RBIs as Lakeside (1-2) defeated visiting Chewelah 12-9 in the first game of a doubleheader.

Chewelah (1-1) won the second game 12-5, scoring five in the first on two hits, three walks, two hit batters and three errors.

GNL boys soccer

Trevor Tharp and George Souza made up for a slow start with one goal and one assist apiece in the second half to lead Pullman (2-0) to a 3-1 win over visiting Chewelah (0-2-1).

Chewelah’s Scott Ace scored from 35 yards midway through the first half.

Justin Emch totaled three goals and one assist, all in the second half, as Riverside (2-0) rallied for a 6-2 win at Deer Park (1-3).

Mark Zienert and Emch took turns feeding one another for late second-half goals that expanded the Rams’ lead to 5-2. Chris Dowers scored both Stags goals, including one in the first minute.
