Students Injured When Bleachers Give Way

A section of wooden bleachers collapsed at the start of a student talent show, injuring nine pupils.

The most seriously injured in Friday’s incident at Pioneer Middle School was a 14-year-old boy who was taken to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital after he complained of back pain, Principal Tom Croppi said. The eight others, who suffered bumps and bruises, were checked and sent home.

Teacher Bruce Hayes was seating students for the second of two talent show assemblies about 1:30 p.m. on Friday, the last day before spring break.

“The next thing I knew it collapsed,” he said.
