Runoff Problems Targeted At Ecology/Epa Meeting

The Washington Department of Ecology and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency will hold a two-day conference on preventing the state’s top water pollution problem, runoff.

Representatives from conservation and irrigation districts, government, and agricultural groups will discuss pollution that comes from agricultural practices, storm water, failing septic systems and other sources. This pollution accounts for at least 60 percent of the pollution in Washington’s lakes and streams.

The conference starts at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Wenatchee Convention Center, 201 N. Wenatchee Ave. For information, call Mary Getchell at 360-407-6157.

The U.S. Commerce Department releases new home sales for February.

Idaho food processors can learn how to tap into the kosher food market and expand their sales at a workshop in Boise from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at the Idaho State Department of Agriculture on 2270 Old Penitentiary Road.

Tuesday

The Workforce Development and Education Councils of the Spokane Area Chamber of Commerce will hold a summit. The purpose of the event, held from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Spokane Community College, is to design a system to develop the workforce to meet the needs of Inland Northwest businesses. Call 459-4115.

The last day producers can take out a Commodity Credit Corp. price support marketing loan on a 1997 crop such as wheat, barley, oats, canola and rapeseed.
