Salmon will try to push back shoulder surgery

Associated Press

Tim Salmon wants to hold off having surgery on his ailing left shoulder until after this season and instead help the Anaheim Angels on their postseason push.

“The idea of sitting at home watching this team in the playoffs would be tough,” Salmon said Thursday before the Angels played Baltimore.

Salmon, who became a designated hitter this year after spending the previous 11 seasons in right field, will have arthroscopic surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff and biceps tendon. He has had discussions with team physician Dr. Lewis Yocum.

“Dr. Yocum said he’d have to go in there and see what it looks like,” Salmon said. “But as long as they still feel I can contribute, that will be the indicator. (Manager Mike) Scioscia and I have had discussions the last few weeks, and he encouraged me to stick it out.”

Salmon, 35, is batting .243 in 55 games with two home runs and 22 RBIs. On July 29, he batted ninth for the first time in his career.

Glavine out until at least Aug. 21

Tom Glavine won’t pitch again for the Mets until at least Aug. 21 while he recovers from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

Glavine was hurt Tuesday while riding in a taxi cab traveling from LaGuardia Airport to nearby Shea Stadium, and lost his two front teeth. He missed his scheduled start Wednesday against Houston.

•Outfielder Cliff Floyd and infielder Jose Reyes joined the Mets’ lengthy injured list, kept out of the starting lineup for Thursday’s win over the Astros.

Floyd was hit by a pitch from Houston’s Roy Oswalt with first base open during Wednesday night’s loss. Floyd hit a grand slam off Oswalt on May 14.

Reyes hobbled off the field after doubling as a pinch-hitter Wednesday night and said he got hurt in early July at Philadelphia.

•Before Thursday’s game, the Mets made several roster moves, optioning right-hander Matt Ginter to Norfolk of the International League, placing right-hander Jose Parra (broken right pinky) on the 60-day D.L., recalling right-hander Dan Wheeler from Norfolk and purchasing the contract of Wilson Delgado from Norfolk.
