GU, WSU open with wins

Twin sisters Annie and Sarah Hawkins combined for three goals to lead the Gonzaga University Bulldogs to a 3-1 non-conference victory over the Wyoming Cowgirls in a women’s soccer season opener in Laramie, Wyo., on Friday.

Annie Hawkins took a pass from Ashley Pryor and scored just 3:14 into the match.

Sarah Hawkins stretched the lead to 2-0 in the 19th minute and made it 3-0 with a goal at 52:19.

Mari Gomes spoiled GU keeper Ashley Haugen’s bid for a shutout when she scored the Cowgirls’ lone goal in the 55th minute.

•Alix Rustrum tallied goals in both halves and the Washington State Cougars kicked off their season with a 2-0 victory over the Denver Pioneers in the Montana Nike Cup Tournament in Missoula.

Rustrum, on an assist from Angela Fajardo, scored in the 16th minute to give WSU a 1-0 lead.

She added her second goal in the 69th minute. Haley Miller and Cailan McCutchan assisted on the second-half score.

WSU keeper Katie Hultin earned the shutout.

•The Montana Grizzlies came within a minute of shutting out the Idaho Vandals in a 2-1 victory in the second game of the Montana Nike Cup.

The Grizzlies won the season opener for both teams with goals in the 18th and 72nd minute.

Idaho averted a shutout when Jenny Springer scored an unassisted goal at 89:09.

Volleyball

The North Idaho Cardinals posted a 4-1 record on the first day of the Outback Invitational tournament in Twin Falls, Idaho.

Chanele Larsen had 10 kills to lead NIC to a 30-18, 22-30, 15-13 win over Casper College.

Western Wyoming handed the Cardinals their only loss of the day, 30-23, 30-15, 15-13.

NIC rebounded with a 31-29, 22-30, 18-16 win over Salt Lake CC behind nine kills from Collese Dorman.

NIC came from behind to defeat Yavapai College 28-30, 30-22, 15-9 and outlasted Sheridan College 30-21, 18-30, 15-6.
