Man fatally shot during a quarrel
A 24-year-old man was shot to death early Saturday morning in a Curlew, Wash., apartment where authorities say he got into a quarrel after a night of drinking.
The victim was identified as Benjamin S. Brown, whose last known address was in Nevada. Ferry County Sheriff Pete Warner said in a press release that Brown was shot by a woman who is being held in the county jail. Warner declined to identify her because formal charges had not been filed.
According to Warner, Brown was part of a group that had been drinking at a local tavern until it closed at 2 a.m. The shooting occurred about 2:35 a.m. at the Old School Apartments, which are owned by Superior Court Judge Rebecca Baker and her husband, Joe Abraham.
Warner said Brown became embroiled in an argument with another man and the woman who shot him. The two men fought, and the woman produced a pistol and shot Brown twice, the sheriff said.
Curlew is a small, unincorporated community about 25 miles north of Republic, Wash., near the Canadian border.
