Williams wants award thrown out

Ricky Williams wants to overturn the $8.6 million award an arbitrator said he owes the Miami Dolphins for breaching his contract.

Williams filed papers in federal court Nov. 24 – the papers were not entered into the court’s computer system until this week – saying “the arbitrator acted in manifest disregard of the clear and unequivocal laws of Florida and Louisiana,” and that “enforcement of the award would violate well-established public policy.”

Jacksonville seeks Super Bowl aid

Jacksonville authorities asked a Senate committee for an additional $1.3 million to help pay for security requirements for the Super Bowl.

Duval County Sheriff John Rutherford, whose agency has primary responsibility for the Feb. 6 game’s safety, said the additional money is largely needed because of increased security measures resulting from the events of Sept. 11, 2001.

Taylor pleads not guilty

Washington Redskins rookie safety Sean Taylor plans to call teammates as witnesses to say he was sober when he was arrested for drunken driving on Oct. 27.

Taylor pleaded not guilty to the charge, and his trial was rescheduled for Jan. 5.

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed defensive end Eddie Freeman and re-signed running back David Allen. … Buffalo Bills running back Travis Henry could miss the rest of the season because of a lower right leg injury. … Chicago linebacker Brian Urlacher returned to practice and is listed as questionable for Sunday’s game against Minnesota. … Kansas City quarterback Trent Green did not practice because of sore ribs and remains questionable for Sunday’s game at Oakland. Running back Priest Holmes, linebacker Monty Beisel and safety Greg Wesley will miss the Oakland game with injuries. Free safety Jerome Woods is listed as doubtful. … If running back Emmitt Smith can’t go on Sunday in Detroit, undrafted rookie Larry Croom will start for Arizona. … Oakland running back Tyrone Wheatley had an MRI and will likely miss two to three weeks. … New York Giants running back Tiki Barber did not practice because of stitches in his knee but will likely play Sunday. … Chicago Bears defensive end Alex Brown got a five-year contract extension.
