Washington State’s tennis coach honored for her service

Washington State University tennis coach Lisa Hart has received a 2004 Sectional Community Service Award from the United States Tennis Association and the Intercollegiate Tennis Association.

Hart, in her second season as head coach at WSU, was one of 12 coaches nationwide to receive the honor. She was selected from the Pacific Northwest Section. The award honors ITA coaches for significant contributions in developing community-based tennis programs.

“It’s an honor to be nominated and selected (from the) Pacific Northwest Section for this prestigious award,” Hart said. “We hope to continue to promote tennis within the community.”

College scene

Whitworth’s men’s and women’s soccer teams, and four Pirates women, have collected academic awards for the fall.

Both the men and women tied for third in the Team Academic Award competition conducted by the National Soccer Coaches Association and Adidas. Whitworth was one of 53 schools to have both programs recognized.

The men have a 3.43 grade-point average. There were 73 four-year schools with men’s programs considered. The women have a 3.60 GPA. There are 290 schools with women’s programs in the running.

Individually, Jael Hagerott, a sophomore from Mead with a 3.97 GPA in kinesiology, was named to the CoSIDA college division Academic All-District VIII first team. Named to the second team were Mary Hultgrenn, a senior from Pasco (3.48, education and biology); Ashley Fisk, a junior from Bellevue (3.47, psychology); and Jody Rucinski, a junior from Whitefish, Mont., (3.85, education).

Golf

Brad Blakley of Gonzaga Prep, winner of the 2004 Pacific Northwest Golf Association boys championship, has signed a national letter of intent with the University of Portland, Pilots coach Bill Winter announced.

Blakley, a two-time All-Greater Spokane League selection, qualified for the match play portion of the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur and was a member of Washington’s 2004 Junior America’s Cup team.

Blakley’s father, Les, is a former Pilots golfer.
