Curlew stuns Kettle Falls with unlikely comeback

Sometimes 30 seconds can last a lifetime.

Curlew, from the Class B Panorama League, overcame a six-point deficit in the final 30 seconds to knock off Class 1A Kettle Falls 61-60 in a non-league girls basketball game Tuesday at Curlew.

The Cougars cut the deficit to six with 45 seconds left on a basket by Brittany Strandberg. Kady Kirkendall halved that with a 3-pointer 15 seconds later. Curlew got a steal and basket with 15 seconds left, and got the winner on a baseline 10-footer at the buzzer by Nicole Miller.

Miller, battling the flu as much as she was the Bulldogs, led the Cougars with 18 points. Kirkendall added another 14.

Liz Beardslee’s 16 led Kettle Falls.

In other games: Deer Park 58, Kellogg 37: Deer Park built a 10-point lead in the first half at home. Laura Gibson and Kaytee Clough each tossed in 14 points to lead the Stags. Cami Wendta’s 18 led Kellogg. … Lakeside-Nine Mile Falls 53, Freeman 46: The home-standing Eagles got 13 points from Kelsey Stillar, and 10 each from Tiffany Corigliano and Kia Gibson to hold off the Class 1A Scotties. Jessie DePell led all scorers with 17 for Freeman, with Ashlee Taylor adding another dozen.

Pullman 58, Colfax 49: The Greyhounds got 13 points from Kelli Davis and another 12 from Jamie Thornton to win at home over the defending state Class 1A champion Bulldogs. Jordan Harazin’s 11 points led Colfax. … Valley Christian 54, Northport 24: Emily Oliver had 13 points, Erica Hattamer eight points and nine steals, and Hillary Joyce seven points and a dozen rebounds for the host Panthers in a win over the Mustangs. … Garfield-Palouse 49, Potlatch 31: At Palouse, the Vikings held the visiting Loggers scoreless in the third quarter to take control.

Davenport 52, Rosalia 33: The Gorillas went on a 14-3 run in the third quarter to take control of the game at Davenport. Mallory Mielke had 16 points and nine steals to lead the Gorillas. Kari Claas added 12 points, with Kaylee Semprimoznik and Darci Dehn each adding another 10. … Sprague-Harrington 57, St. George’s 35: The Falcons grabbed a 33-19 advantage on the boards and held a 16-3 edge in steals at Sprague. Ronni-Jo Mielke led three players in double figures for Sprague-Harrington, tossing in a game-high 14 points. Stacie Sheilds added 13 and Abby Hatten 12. … Lake Roosevelt 74, Wilbur-Creston 40: Rowena St. Pierre scored 20 points, grabbed 10 rebounds, dished off five assists and made nine steals to lead the host Raiders past the Wildcats at Coulee Dam. Rhonda St. Pierre added 14 points.
