Five Illini score in double digits as Ducks lose first

Illinois apparently is going to spend a little longer at No. 1 this time.

Luther Head had 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting and all five starters reached double figures, leading the top-ranked Illini (9-1) to an 83-66 rout of the Oregon Ducks (4-1) at the United Center in Chicago on Saturday.

Deron Williams added 17 and seven assists, Dee Brown had 13 points and James Augustine had 10 points and eight rebounds.

Roger Powell Jr. finished with 12 points despite spending most of the first half on the bench with foul trouble.

Bryce Taylor had 19 to lead Oregon, which lost for the first time this year.

The Illini led the Ducks from the opening tip, and Oregon couldn’t get within double-digits the last 25 minutes of the game.

Illinois shot a blistering 58 percent and led by as much as 21 in the second half. The Illini had assists on 20 of their 29 baskets and were 19 of 22 from the free throw line, not missing one until the second half.

(15) Arizona 67, Utah 62: At Tucson, Ariz., Channing Frye scored 19 points despite foul trouble and Hassan Adams slammed home a rebound with 40 seconds to play as the Wildcats (6-2) defeated the Utes (5-3). The victory was the 1,000th for Lute Olson as a head coach in 47 years at the high school, junior college and major college level. Andrew Bogut, Utah’s 7-foot Australian center, had 20 points and 10 rebounds.

(20) Michigan St. 78, Stanford 53: At Auburn Hills, Mich., Paul Davis scored 20 points and keyed a first-half surge as the Spartans (5-2) beat the Cardinal (2-4). Michigan State took control with an 18-4 run midway through the first half and was able to coast the rest of the way. Matt Haryasz led the Cardinal with 12 points.

Georgia 76, Oregon State 74 (OT): At Atlanta, Levi Stukes broke out of a shooting slump with a career-high 31 points, including a go-ahead 3-pointer in overtime that carried the Bulldogs (3-3) to a win over the Beavers (4-3). Freshman Sundiata Gaines just beat the buzzer with a shot at the end of regulation, sending Georgia to overtime tied at 65. Kenny Hooks hit a couple of free throws to give OSU its final lead at 70-68. Stukes responded with a 3 that put the Bulldogs ahead for good with 1:50 remaining. Stukes carried his team by hitting 10 of 18 from the field, including four 3-pointers, to eclipse his previous career best of 25 points. He also had four steals. Marcel Jones led Oregon State with 14 points.

UCLA 85, Pepperdine 83: At Los Angeles, Jordan Farmar scored a season-high 25 points and drove the lane for the go-ahead basket with 4.7 seconds left to give the Bruins (5-1) a win over the Waves (7-2). Josh Shipp had 15 points and 12 rebounds starting for injured senior Dijon Thompson. Lorenzo Mata had seven points and 11 rebounds and Arron Afflalo chipped in with 11 points. In all, the four freshmen scored 58 of UCLA’s 85 points and grabbed 27 of the 41 rebounds. Glen McGowan scored 24 points and Acker added 19 for the Waves.

USC 87, San Diego 75: At San Diego, sophomore guard Lodrick Stewart scored a career-high 27 points and Gregg Guenther had 16 rebounds to lead the Trojans (3-3) over the Toreros (3-5) and give Jim Saia his first win as USC coach. Errick Craven added 14 points for the Trojans. Guenther’s 16 rebounds were a career-high. Bryce Vounang had 26 points for the Toreros.

California 60, San Diego St. 57: At San Diego, Eric Vierneisel hit a 3-pointer with more than 5 minutes left that helped the Golden Bears (5-3) hold off the Aztecs (4-3). A 3-point attempt by San Diego States’ Matt Thomas bounced off the rim at the buzzer. DeVon Hardin led Cal with 11 points, and Dominic McGuire and Marquise Kately had 10 apiece. Aztec Marcus Slaughter led all players with 18 points and nine rebounds, and Heath added 14 points. The Aztecs shot just 35 percent from the floor and made just 4 of 19 3-pointers.
