Vandals pick up first victory

Associated Press

MOSCOW, Idaho – Dandrick Jones scored 19 points Saturday to lead Idaho to its first win of the season, a 79-47 basketball victory over NAIA opponent Great Falls.

The win broke a seven-game losing streak for Idaho (1-7), the worst start to a season for the Vandals since 1939. The loss was the third consecutive for Great Falls (2-10).

The Argonauts were able to stay close in the first half, but Idaho quickly took control in the second.

After leading by 10 at halftime, Idaho opened the second half on a 12-1 run to take a commanding 47-26 lead.

Idaho held Great Falls without a field goal for the first 5:27 of the second half, which allowed Vandals coach Leonard Perry to go deep into his bench. Twelve Vandals saw time and all scored.

Besides Jones, Tanoris Shepard was the only Idaho player to reach double figures in scoring, adding 13 points and six assists.

Great Falls was led by James Edwards, who scored 13 points and grabbed eight rebounds.

The Vandals’ struggles at the free-throw line helped Great Falls stay close in the first half. Idaho hit just 6 of 11 attempts in the first half, but made good on 10 of 14 in the second to pull away.
