Tar Heels return without a hitch

Jawad Williams scored a season-high 25 points, Sean May added 16 and No. 4 North Carolina had no problems after a weeklong layoff, beating N.C.-Wilmington 96-75 in Chapel Hill, N.C., Tuesday night.

Raymond Felton finished with 12 points and 10 assists as the Tar Heels (10-1) won their 10th straight. In five home games this season, they have yet to trail. The Seahawks fell to 5-4.

North Carolina made its first seven shots – including four 3-pointers – and led 19-3 barely 5 1/2 minutes into the game. Another fast start after halftime stretched the lead to 67-35.

(7) Syracuse 72, Albany 55: Hakim Warrick had 22 points and 14 rebounds, and Demetris Nichols returned to the lineup with 10 points to lead the Orange (12-1) over Albany (4-5).

(9) Georgia Tech 92, Lafayette 58: Freshman Anthony Morrow scored a career-high 20 points, including 11 in a late 27-3 surge in the Yellow Jackets’ victory over Lafayette (3-7) at Atlanta.

(11) Connecticut 73, Sacred Heart 55: Josh Boone had 20 points and 10 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season in the host Huskies’ (7-1) victory over the Pioneers (1-8) at Hartford.

(16) Iowa 73, Air Force (63): Pierre Pierce scored 19 points and the Hawkeyes (11-1) held off a spirited comeback attempt by the Falcons (6-5) for a win at Iowa City, Iowa.

(17) North Carolina St. 84, Columbia 74: Cameron Bennerman had a career-high 24 points and picked up the slack for foul-plagued Julius Hodge, leading the Wolfpack (10-1) over the Lions (6-3) in the Holiday Festival at New York.

(24) Maryland 112, Liberty 68: John Gilchrist had a season-high 28 points in 22 minutes, leading the Terrapins (8-2) to their fourth straight victory, at the expense of the Flames (1-8) at College Park, Md.

Oregon St. 86, Sacramento St. 59: David Lucas, playing in his first game of the season since having surgery to repair a tendon in his right toe, had 13 points and the Beavers (8-3) beat the Hornets (2-9) in Corvallis, Ore.

Oregon 92, Portland 67: Malik Hairston scored 20 points and Aaron Brooks added 17 to lead the Ducks (8-1) to a victory over the Pilots (9-4) at Eugene, Ore.

Arizona St. 92, Long Island 63: Ike Diogu scored 20 points in 22 minutes as the Sun Devils (10-1) beat the Blackbirds (4-5) in the first round of the Arizona State Hoops Classic in Tempe, Ariz. The Sun Devils advance to today’s championship game against Valparaiso, a 69-56 winner over Penn State earlier in the day.

USC 91, Southern 58: Lodrick Stewart scored 20 points to lead the Trojans (7-4) over the Jaguars (3-6). Southern had eight players available. Three of its players were stranded by snowstorms while attempting to return to the Baton Rouge, La., school after the Christmas break and did not make the trip.
