Daylong event at SCC will feature traditional, ethnic dance and music

Performer applications for the ninth annual Spokane Fall Folk Festival are available at www.spokanefolklore.org.

This year’s daylong festival, sponsored by the Spokane Folklore Society, will be at the Spokane Community College Lair on Nov. 6. The free event features seven stages of traditional and ethnic dance and music along with workshops and special entertainment and crafts for children.

Seeking artists

• Spokane Art School is seeking works for Yuletide 2004, its 25th annual juried holiday sale of fine arts and crafts Dec. 2-5.

Works are needed in ceramics, woodworking, painting, printmaking, drawing, mixed media, photography, jewelry, glass, sculpture, fiber arts, handmade paper, wrought iron and other media, as well as seasonal holiday items such as cards, wreaths, menorahs, wrapping paper, clothing, toys and ornaments. Works must be original, not produced by kits, commercial molds, or student work.

Submission deadline is Sept. 10. Artists will be notified of the jury’s decision by Oct. 1. Applications are available at the school, 920 N. Howard St., or via e-mail at sueellen@spokaneartschool.org.

• Moses Lake Museum and Art Center is looking for fine art and original crafts from Washington artists to include in its annual Holiday Show and Sale, Nov. 19 through Dec. 31.

Needed are three-dimensional works including ornaments, sculpture and pottery. Submission deadline is Oct. 1. For entry details call (509) 766-9395.

Kudos

• Colville bronze sculptor Jerry McKellar’s life-size sculpture “Flower Dancing in the Wind” was accepted into the juried 2004 Art on the Plaza exhibition in Sheridan, Wyo., and will be on display through June 2005. McKellar also received one of only four honorariums given to the participating artists.

• Dorie Clark of Spokane is a finalist in the Pacific Northwest Quiltfest to be held Aug. 13-15 at the Seattle Center Exhibition Hall. Her entries, “Starlight Migration” and “Elly’s Tulips,” will compete with 250 quilts and wearable art entries from through the Northwest.

Classes and workshops

• Corbin Art Center, 507 W. Seventh Ave., is offering the following classes beginning the week of July 19. All run Monday through Friday and cost $20 each. Preregistration is required by calling 625-6200:

Tune In, ages 3-5, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; Cartooning, ages 6-11, 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.; Fun from A-Z, ages 3-5, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Beaded Jewelry, ages 6-11, 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.; Bugs!, ages 3-5, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; Paper Making, ages 6-11, 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.; Sand Art, ages 3-5, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.; Tie Dyeing, ages 6-11, 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

• Spokane Civic Theatre is offering an Acting Up Drama Camp for ages 10-12, July 19-22 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Southside Senior Activity Center, 3151 E. 27th Ave. Cost is $49. To register, call 625-6200 or see www.spokaneparks.org.

• A Video Camp for grades 5-8 will be held July 26-30 from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. at Discovery School, 325 S. Grant St. Participants will learn to operate digital video cameras, import and edit video clips on computers and produce a project about public art in Spokane. Cost is $75.
