Downtown restaurant seeks to add sidewalk café

A downtown sports bar and restaurant wants to add a sidewalk café with four tables along Riverside Avenue, just east of its intersection with Lincoln Street.

Heroes and Legends has applied to the city of Spokane for a permit to build an enclosure stretching out from the restaurant at 825 W. Riverside.

As proposed, the enclosure would span almost 37 feet of the west side of the restaurant’s storefront. It would extend out from the restaurant by eight feet and nine inches, leaving seven feet and four inches of sidewalk width for pedestrian traffic.

The city will hold a hearing on the proposal at 10 a.m. Friday in conference room 2B on the second floor of City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.

The business proposes operating the sidewalk café from May to September, 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The city’s director of engineering services has recommended approval, subject to several conditions. First, a minimum of eight feet of sidewalk should be maintained between the curb and fenced area. Also, the corner of the fence at Riverside and Lincoln should be cut off at a 45-degree angle to create less of an obstruction for people walking around the corner, the recommendation says.

Earlier this year, Heroes and Legends erected a blue metal enclosure, apparently in preparation for creating a sidewalk café. However, the business quickly took it down when informed a permit was needed, said Dave Mandyke, the city’s deputy director of public works and utilities.

“They submitted a revised size to allow a little better pedestrian traffic,” Mandyke said. “They’ve been great to deal with.”

Heroes and Legends’ owners could not be reached for comment.
