Keep it fresh with Vege Savers

There are times when the crisper drawer just doesn’t live up to its name.

If your lettuce and salad greens start to wilt before the week’s second salad, Cindy Scinto may be able to help. Washed greens will stay fresh for a week or more in her Vege Saver bags, she says.

Scinto started sewing the terry cloth bags after she noticed them in an airline magazine. She made hers a little bigger and gave them a snap closure and she swears by their performance. “I used to just wrap my (greens) in moist paper towels, but a lot of people just leave their lettuce in the plastic and they don’t realize that it doesn’t breathe,” Scinto says.

She says she recently put some washed salad greens in one of the Vege Saver bags she uses at home. “It was 10 days before they even started to look like they were getting a little worn out.”

Scinto sells the Vege Savers for $5.75 at the Liberty Lake Farmers’ Market on Saturdays at her booth, Simply Organic Produce. The market runs from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the parking lot of the Liberty Square building.

Oh I wish …

I could drive the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile? OK. Maybe it’s not high on your wish list, but you have to admit is sounds like fun.

This summer, Oscar Mayer is offering a chance for 50 people to win the use of one of its famous Wienermobiles for a day and up to $5,000 cash.

“Whether the wish is to have the Wienermobile whisk you and your friends away to your favorite sporting event complete with the ultimate tailgate party or to use the Wienermobile as the limousine for your wedding or even to visit a children’s hospital, offering kids free rides in the Wienermobile, Oscar Mayer will make the wish come true,” the company said in a news release.

To enter, tell Oscar Mayer (in 50 words or less) what you would do with the Wienermobile for a day if you had $5,000 to spend on the wish. Entry forms are available at oscarmayer.com. Or send your entry to: Oh I Wish Contest, P.O. Box 4377, Blair, NE 68009-4377.

Winners will be chosen based on originality, creativity, the use of the Wienermobile in the wish and the willingness to help others. All entries must be received by Thursday.
