Huskies nine strokes off pace in NCAA men’s golf championship

The University of Washington men’s golf team, with three of their five players graduates of Spokane high schools, remained in fourth place after the third round of the NCAA men’s golf championships on Thursday in Hot Springs, Va.

The Huskies shot 5-over 285 to trail tournament leader UCLA by nine strokes going into today’s final round. They are four shots out of second place, tied with Arizona at 16-over 856 after 54 holes of play. California is third at 855 and Kentucky remains second at 852.

Ryan Moore of Nevada-Las Vegas fired a tournament-best 6-under 64 Thursday to take a two-stroke lead at 9-under 201 in the individual race. Arizona’s Chris Nallen is second at 203 and Kentucky’s Matt Wells is third at 204.

Senior All-American Brock Mackenzie leads the Huskies with a three-round total of 211 after shooting a 69 Thursday on the Cascade Course at The Homestead. Mackenzie enters the final round in 13th place at 1-over 211. Senior Corey Prugh (Ferris HS) shot a 1-over 71 for the Huskies and is at 214. After opening with a 10-over 80, he has bounced back to shoot 1-over during the last two rounds, his best 36-hole stretch this season.

Redshirt freshman Erik Olson finished at 2-over 72 and is at 215. Freshman Alex Prugh (Ferris) shot 73, his highest round of the week. He was hurt by a double-bogey on the par-3 fourth hole when his drive rolled out of bounds. Prugh is at 214.

For the third straight day Dan Potter, a Gonzaga Prep grad from Coeur d’Alene shot 73 and stands at 219.
