Maytag and UAW to resume negotiations

The Spokesman-Review

NEWTON, Iowa — Maytag Corp. and the United Auto Workers agreed Friday to resume negotiations this week.

A joint announcement said talks will resume Wednesday.

The two sides last talked on June 10, the day UAW Local 997 workers walked off their jobs beginning a strike, suspending operations at the company’s flagship laundry products plants. The previous contract had expired May 31.

The union represents 1,525 workers in Newton.

Maytag spokeswoman Lynne Dragomier wouldn’t say which side requested the return to the bargaining table. “Both sides agreed that this is the right time,” she said.
