Suspect in high-speed chase captured

From staff reports

Washington State Department of Correction escapee Shappa Jay Baker was taken into custody in Great Falls without incident Friday night and will be extradited to Spokane, Spokane police spokesman Dick Cottam said.

Baker, 27, allegedly eluded police at speeds up to 90 mph through northwest Spokane neighborhoods on Wednesday night.

In addition to the arrest warrant for escape, Baker also faces two counts of first-degree assault for allegedly attempting to kill Spokane motorcycle patrolman Ken Applewaite and another officer in a patrol car during the chase. Baker nearly ran over Applewaite and crashed into his motorcycle.
