British soldier killed, 2 hurt amid explosion

LONDON – One British soldier was killed and two were wounded by a bomb in southern Iraq on Monday, the Ministry of Defense said. The blast went off near British military vehicles in Basra, a city controlled by British forces, a spokesman said. The ministry identified the dead soldier as 19-year-old Gordon Gentle of Glasgow, Scotland, who had recently joined the 1st Battalion Royal Highland Fusiliers.
